The second requirement for Eagle states: "Demonstrate that you live by the principles of the Scout Oath and Scout Law in your daily life. List on your Eagle Scout Rank Application the names of individuals who know you personally and would be willing to provide a recommendation on your behalf, including parents/guardians, religious, educational, and employer references."

The Eagle Scout Rank Application asks for six references (five if the Scout is not employed) to be listed who are willing to furnish a recommendation on the Scout’s behalf.

  • Parents/guardians
  • Religious
  • Educational
  • Employer (if any)
  • Two other references

In addition to listing the references on the application, the Northeast Georgia Council asks that the Eagle candidate contact the listed references and request a reference letter. The letters of reference should be returned unopened to the Scout’s unit leader (Troop Scoutmaster or Crew Advisor). The Scout’s unit leader should then bring these unopened envelopes to the Scout’s Eagle Board. See attachments below for explainations of the reference letters.

Recomendation: The scout should provide pre-addressed stamped envelopes with the reference requests. Each envelope should be pre-addressed to the unit leader, with the reference type (religious, work, etc.) and scout's name stated on the back of the envelope so the unit leader will know which letter has been received.

All letters of reference will be treated with strict confidence and destroyed after the National Advancement Program Team confirms the Eagle rank has been earned by the Scout.
